New LIfe in Santa Maria
Members of New LIfe Church from Exeter, California worked extremely hard on the second stage of a new and improved 24th street, Santa María, El Salvador.

Working Together
1,640 feet of street were finished by team of community residents, local government officials, and volunteers from New Life Church and Vanguard University.

Starting Stage Two
Storm gutters comprised the first stage of construction and was finished in 2010. Even though the road would not be complete for another year, the first stage provided hope and motivation for the second stage of graveling and paving that would come.

A New Road Can Bring Health and Safety
With the new road, the water will run easily into the storm drain. Previously, deep pools of dirty and mosquito-infested water would create treacherous travel conditions and health hazards.

Moving Material and Making "Mezcla"
Moving heavy debris and mixing cement, which Salvadorans call "mezcla", is very strenuous. However, members of New Life Church didn't complain.

Many Benefits from the New Road
A new life awaits the residents of 24th Street in Santa María. Approximately 600 people were helped directly. Additionally, the value of the area's homes increased.

Pitching In
Despite being impoverished and often working more than one job, local residents participated eagerly in the construction of their community's road. Such participation is due to the church's strong connection to its community and the clout that the short-term mission teams bring to a church as it spearheads a project.

Making Friends
Adam, a member of New Life Church, plays with kids of Santa María despite a language barrier. When mission teams attempt to connect in this manner to the people they are serving, the local church's long-term partnership with its community grows stronger.

Joyful Servant Leader
Pastor Santiago and his church are happy to serve their community. He commented, "People are not afraid anymore to come to church or to work with us. I know they now see the church as a good host of the [road] project and that makes me really happy!"

Pastors, Friends, Brothers in Christ!
The strong relationship between Miguel Duran, a long-time partner with ENLACE, and Santiago, the local pastor in Santa Maria, helps them to encourage each other to continue serving their communities through their churches.

Remembering Those in Need
Members of Vanguard University not only worked hard on the road, but they also visited local homes to encourage families and deliver basic foods. Christina Robeck, leader of the team expressed, "It's easy for me sometimes to forget how difficult is to have basic things in life."
