PANCHIMALCO REGION

Panchimalco is the closest colonial town to El Salvador's capital, San Salvador. It is located about 15 kilometers southeast is 575 meters above sea level.  Panchimalco, “The Place of Flags and Shields”, has 41,260 inhabitants, sometimes called "Panchos." This municipality is known for its indigenous population and its festivities. Together with Izalco, Panchimalco is considered one of the last two remaining bastions of indigenous people in El Salvador. Villagers still weave and wear colorful native textiles and maintain many indigenous traditions. The Panchimalco zone is comprised of 14 hamlets and 65 villages. The economic activity consists mainly of crop cultivation such as rice, beans and corn, and a variety of fruits. The majority of the population is made up of subsistence farmers or small-scale merchants. A small number of families raise cattle, chickens and swine to sell in the market.
