Los Abelines Region

The Abelines region is comprised of 11 remote villages in the mountainous northeastern part of El Salvador in the department of Morazan. It is approximately 2000 meters above sea level and has an estimated population of 19,572. The closest town, Ciudad Barrios, is about an hour and a half drive or a three-hour walk. Most homes in this area are headed by women who work in agricultural activity or raise poultry. The average resident has a third-grade education and is involved in small-scale agriculture which provides food for the household and sometimes a small amount left over to sell. According to the national government, more than 75 percent of the inhabitants of this region live in extreme poverty, making less than one dollar per day. Over the years, initiatives such as home gardens, health campaigns, local clinic construction, a pedestrian bridge and, most recently, running water and electricity projects have been completed as local churches have worked to transform their communities. Even so, many challenges remain.
